Why Getting Laid Off Was the Best Thing for My Small Business Journey

Thanksgiving has always been a favorite holiday of mine. Who doesn't love the opportunity to eat as much as you want, spend time with family, and then take a 3-hour nap?
But mostly, I love the opportunity it gives us to turn our thoughts inward and truly consider what we're grateful for. This year has been rough for many, including me, but it's also been a year of tremendous personal growth, my small business journey, and I'm finding myself grateful for things I would have taken for granted a year ago.
I'm grateful for losing my job in early February. That's right, I said it, and I'll say it again—I'm thankful I got laid off. I was burnt out, didn’t feel valued, and was struggling to find balance between work and my personal life.
I'm thankful for the opportunity and inspiration to start Prairie Bookkeeping. It hasn't been easy, and it's still an uphill battle. But there's something truly rewarding in building the kind of company I always wanted to be a part of.
I'm grateful for my network, who have been so supportive and helped me see more value in myself than I ever had before. As I've been able to see myself through their eyes and find new perspectives, I'm growing and learning how to be confident in what I have to offer.
Lastly, I'm thankful for all of you! My clients and audience have supported me, brought insight and growth, and given me the opportunity to share what I have to offer.
So this Thanksgiving, please raise a glass to falling down so you can learn new ways to get up, to losing sight of what's important so you can feel that joy when you find it again, and to the good and kind people of this world who make a difference—one little statement, nudge, and hug at a time.
Thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving.
Cheers!
Andrea
